In het internetspel Entropia Universe is het recordbedrag van ruim 228.000 euro (330.000 dollar) betaald voor een virtueel stuk grond. Speler Buzz Erik Lightyear mag zich nu de trotse eigenaar noemen van het digitale ruimtestation Crystal Palace. Dat meldde informaticasite tweakers.net vandaag.
Entropia Universe wordt wereldwijd gespeeld door honderdduizenden mensen. In het spel wordt een eigen munteenheid gebruikt die in te wisselen is voor Amerikaanse dollars in de echte wereld. Lightyear kocht het ruimtestation voor 3.300.000 PED's (Project Entropia Dollars), wat omgerekend 330.000 dollar is.
In zijn ruimtestation mag Lightyear belasting heffen en spullen verkopen aan andere spelers. Theoretisch kan hij hiermee zijn investering terugverdienen. In 2004 werd een virtueel eiland in Entropia Universe voor 26.500 dollar verkocht. De eigenaar verdiende dit bedrag binnen een jaar terug en maakt nu winst met zijn aankoop.
Het vorige record stond op 100.000 dollar, dat in 2005 betaald werd voor een ruimtestation dat zich ook bevindt in Entropia Universe.

'Supercomputer moet naar Nederland'
Een van de vijf nieuw te bouwen Europese supercomputers moet in Nederland komen, bij voorkeur in de omgeving van Schiphol. Dat vindt het kabinet.
Om de nieuwe supercomputer heen moet een zogeheten supernode ontstaan, een knooppunt van infrastructuur, met onder andere een glasvezelnet en een datacenter.
''Samen moeten deze faciliteiten ervoor zorgen dat ons land kan blijven meedraaien in de eredivisie van de rekencapaciteit'', zo bleek vrijdag uit een verklaring van het kabinet.

Mexico City, Mexico (CNN) -- A reputed Mexican drug lord with a $5 million reward on his head has been named to Forbes magazine's list of the most powerful people in the world.
Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who authorities say heads the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, is believed to have shipped $6 billion to $19 billion in cocaine to the United States over the past eight years, Forbes says in the listing.
The magazine ranks him No. 41, ahead of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev (No. 43), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (46), French President Nicolas Sarkozy (56) and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (67). Guzman also bested U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts (49) and entertainer Oprah Winfrey (45) on the list, released Wednesday.

According to The Sunday Times, the scientists, in a major breakthrough, have been able to "decode" and convert brain signals or activity into crude moving images on a computer screen.
During the research, the scientists used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology to scan the brains of two volunteers as they watched videos.

I used to frequent a conspiracy theory message board (forum) called godlikeproductions (http://www.godlikeproductions.com). You can find all sorts of crazy topics on there, but every now and then you can find some truly interesting info that seems to have credible sources that you can actually validate. I would visit for the entertainment value and also for the chance that I might stumble upon a post by someone that might actually know something.
Anyway, one day I saw a post titled “The truth about GLP”. It looked interesting so I clicked it. The poster said to google three things: “webhelper trinity”, “the best kept secret in america” and “godlikeproductions”. Before I did this, I scrolled down to see some of the responses. Someone had posted a couple of sentences that didn’t make sense. They said, “Jack_Frost has caused quite a buzz by buying out a popular internet message board, godlikeproductions.com. He is posting there under the name “^TrInItY^”, and bans anyone who mentions bunny or flowers.”
A couple of posts later, someone quoted that and said, “See! Some of the words automatically got changed” or something along those lines. I thought to myself, “Wow, so this conspiracy theory message board is censoring certain words.” I really wanted to know what the original sentence said so I started googling like the original poster advised. Upon googling “webhelper trinity”, I clicked on the first link and it was to a thread on a message board. I actually found the exact sentence that the poster had copied and pasted (without the changes obviously)...... read more:

Once again computers are proving more capable at something that has long been the domain of humans.
Nothing all that unusual here, really: Machine-based lip recognition systems have finally advanced to the point where they can detect with 80 percent accuracy what a person is saying, in the absence of audio. Humans score a pathetic 32 percent accuracy on average on the same job.

A team of neuroscientists at the University of Oxford have discovered a way to trigger behavior in flies by selectively modifying neurons in their brain and stimulating them with a laser in order to simulate a learning experience. As published in the science journal Cell, flies were made to prefer one smell over another even though they had no real world experience associated with either smell. The experiment has important implications for the eventual development of a technology to create false human memories. We could one day “learn” by having experiences directly inputed into our brains.

Piratenpartij krijgt tweede zetel Europarlement!!!! :)
De Zweedse 'Piratenpartij' krijgt een tweede zetel voor het Europese Parlement. Eerder dit jaar behaalde de partij al een zetel, nadat het ruim zeven procent van de Zweedse stemmen in de wacht sleepte. Het zou een tweede zetel krijgen bij het inwerkingtreden van het verdrag van Lissabon, wat voorheen de afgeschoten Europese grondwet was.
Nu ook de laatste handtekening onder het verdrag is gezet, die van de Tsjechische president Klaus, is de extra zetel beschikbaar gekomen.
Ondanks het feit dat de partij fel tégen het verdrag was zal het toch de tweede zetel innemen. Dit zal gedaan worden door de 22-jarige Amelia Andersdotter. Zij is meteen het jongste lid van het Europees Parlement. De andere zetel is vergeven aan Christian Engstrom.

Dit hebben Italiaanse media vandaag gemeld. De illegale afvalhandel is een van de belangrijkste inkomstenbronnen van de Camorra en zorgt voor grote overlast bij de bevolking.

The European Court of Auditors on Tuesday was for the 15th year in a row unable to sign off the EU accounts, due to a high level of errors in the areas of regional and rural development aid, which account for over a third of the community budget.
But the report notes improvements in the management of agriculture payments, which takes the lion's share of the EU budget (€55 billion). The sector has for the first time been given a green light, having an error rate of below two percent.
Unlike in other years, when naming and shaming misbehaving member states was a taboo for both the European Commission and the Court of Auditors, this time around the three southern countries were highlighted for being responsible for some 80 percent of the errors in the field of regional policy.

Solar flares could 'damage' Earth

Space scientist Dr Maggie Adairin-Pocock explains how powerful explosions on the sun's surface could cause widespread damage to communications systems on Earth.
The last time this happened on a massive scale was 150 years ago when the Great Solar Flare - as it was known - took out the telegraph system.
The next severe solar explosion is supposed to occur in 2359.
However Dr Adairin-Pocock said the sun goes through a number of different cycles and smaller explosions tend to take place every 11 years.
She said that in 1989, a solar flare managed to "take out" power stations in Quebec and since technology has advanced at a rapid rate, the communications system would be more at risk now

Bill Gates' New Company to Take on Hurricanes?
Bill Gates is a man of many talents. Founder of Microsoft, philanthropist and owner of a mystery company that we don't quite know the purpose of, Bill has proved that his retirement does not mean he's resting on his laurels.
USA Today reports say that Gates is even trying to come up with a way to control the weather. Alright, not quite but he is trying to come up with a way to reduce the speed of hurricanes which in turn, would reduce the damage done by the storms.
According to USA Today five recent U.S. Patent and Trade Office patent applications, made public on July 9, propose slowing hurricanes by pumping cold, deep-ocean water in their paths from barges. All very interesting, however what's more interesting is that if issued, the patents will offer 18 years of legal rights to the idea to Gates and his co-inventors (which include climate scientist Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution of Washington).

Something just punched a hole in Saturn's F-ring
This image was taken in August by Cassini and shows what scientists believe to be signs of something big that punched through Saturns F-ring (the outermost ring), dragging rocks and debris with it.

Collision in solar system leaves nasty gash in the swirling gas clouds of Jupiter
Credit Australian amateur astronomer Anthony Wesley with the discovery. He lives outside of Murrumbateman, New South Wales, about 23 miles north of Canberra.
He was nearing the end of a long skywatching session Sunday when his telescope’s camera recorded what looked like a fresh dark collision scar on Jupiter’s cloud tops. It was moving too slowly to be a Jovian moon’s shadow, and it wasn’t there in observations he’d made a few nights earlier. You can read his full account of the observation at his website.
The mark was similar to marks left after comet Shoemaker-Levy 9’s buckshot-like collision with Jupiter in 1994. The comet had broken into 21 fragments and would pepper the giant planet between July 16 and July 22.

Nasa prepares to bomb the moon
Nasa scientists are preparing to launch a space mission from Cape Canaveral carrying a missile that will fire a hole deep in the surface of the moon.
The aim is to see whether any traces of water will be revealed by the disruption caused to the planet's surface. Nasa will analyse the space cloud caused by the explosion for any sign of water or vapour.
Scientists expect the impact to blast out a huge cloud of dust, gas and vaporized water ice at least 6 miles high - making it visible from Earth.

Scientists have found an unusual way to prevent our planet overheating: move it to a cooler spot.
All you have to do is hurtle a few comets at Earth, and its orbit will be altered. Our world will then be sent spinning into a safer, colder part of the solar system.

Forget phasers on stun, American military and police forces are about to set their lasers on daze, with the launch of two new laser guns.

Implantable Telescope for the Eye
A miniature telescope implanted into the eye could soon help people with vision loss from end-stage macular degeneration. Last week, an advisory panel for the Food and Drug Administration unanimously recommended that the agency approve the implant. Clinical trials of the device, which is about the size of a pencil eraser, suggest it can improve vision by about three and a half lines on an eye chart.

SKYDIVER James Boole told yesterday how he plunged into a mountainside from 6,000ft without a parachute.
James, 31, said he felt like he’d been “hit by a speeding truck” after landing on the snow-covered rocks at 100mph.
But amazingly he lived despite suffering a broken back and rib, a bruised lung and chipped teeth.
He had been filming another skydiver falling for a TV documentary in Russia.
The other man was meant to signal how close he was to the ground, but he was too late and gave James two seconds to open his chute.
Dad-of-one James, of Tamworth, Staffs, said: “I was screaming in pain, coughing up blood.
"I was very worried I’d got internal injuries and I might be dying. I thought about telling someone my last words.”
He was rescued and taken to hospital in Moscow, where he was put in a body brace before flying home.
James added: “People say it all the time, but I feel like the luckiest man in the world.”

Saudi files for 'killer' tracking chip patent
A Saudi Arabian inventor has filed for a patent on a potentially lethal science fiction-style human tracking microchip, the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) told The Local on Friday.
But the macabre innovation that enables remote killing will likely be denied copyright protection.
“While the application is still pending further paperwork on his part, the invention will probably be found to violate paragraph two of the German Patent Law – which does not allow inventions that transgress public order or good morals,” spokeswoman Stephanie Krüger told The Local from Munich.
The patent application – entitled “Implantation of electronic chips in the human body for the purposes of determining its geographical location” – was filed on October 30, 2007, but was only published until last week, or 18 months after submission as required by German law, she said.
“In recent times the number of people sought by security forces has increased,” the Jeddah-based inventor wrote in his summary.
The tiny electronic device, dubbed the “Killer Chip” by Swiss daily Tagesanzeiger, would be suited for tracking fugitives from justice, terrorists, illegal immigrants, criminals, political opponents, defectors, domestic help, and Saudi Arabians who don’t return home from pilgrimages.
“I apply for these reasons and for reasons of state security and the security of citizens,” the statement reads.
After subcutaneous implantation, the chip would send out encrypted radio waves that would be tracked by satellites to confirm the person’s identity and whereabouts. An alternate model chip could reportedly release a poison into the carrier if he or she became a security risk.
“Foreigners are allowed to apply for patents in Germany through a native representative, in this case it was a Munich law firm,” Krüger told The Local. “Most people apply for a patent in several countries, and this inventor probably did too.”
But the law firm, DTS Munich, is no longer responsible for the application.
"We resigned from representation of this case last week," a spokesman said without stating why.

Researchers at the University of Alberta have used LIPUS to gently massage teeth roots and jawbones to cause growth or regrowth, and have grown new teeth. As of June 2006, a large device has been licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Health Canada for use by dentists. A smaller device that fits on braces has also been developed. In order to regrow teeth, the tooth root must be massaged by the LIPUS device for 20 minutes each day for 4 months. It has been approved by both Canadian and American regulatory bodies and a market-ready model is currently being prepared. LIPUS is expected to be commercially available before the end of 2009.

The U.S. Navy wanted to boost sailors' night vision so they could spot infrared signal lights during World War II. However, infrared wavelengths are normally beyond the sensitivity of human eyes. Scientists knew vitamin A contained part of a specialized light-sensitive molecule in the eye's receptors, and wondered if an alternate form of vitamin A could promote different light sensitivity in the eye. They fed volunteers supplements made from the livers of walleyed pikes, and the volunteers' vision began changing over several months to extend into the infrared region. Such early success went down the drain after other researchers developed an electronic snooperscope to see infrared, and the human study was abandoned. WASHINGTON, DC - A noted scientist has just produced proof that the lunar surface was inhabited by intelligent life: a 10-inch angel sculpture embedded in a moon rock.
Geologist Dr. Morris Charles revealed last week that NASA lab workers chipped the angel from one of the rocks brought to Earth by Apollo 11 astronauts 40 years ago, in 1969. Dr. Charles was a NASA scientist himself for 23 years but left the agency in 1987. He still maintains close ties to many of his former colleagues.

Brain Researchers Open Door to Editing Memory
For all that scientists have studied it, the brain remains the most complex and mysterious human organ — and, now, the focus of billions of dollars’ worth of research to penetrate its secrets.
Researchers in Brooklyn have recently accomplished comparable feats, with a single dose of an experimental drug delivered to areas of the brain critical for holding specific types of memory, like emotional associations, spatial knowledge or motor skills.
The drug blocks the activity of a substance that the brain apparently needs to retain much of its learned information. And if enhanced, the substance could help ward off dementias and other memory problems.

Police warn of 'unprecedented' threat to London from over 2,000 G20 protesters
Police are describing the threat to London from G20 protesters as "unprecedented", with seven different protests expected in the capital on the day of next week's summit.
However senior officers were insistent that London would not be shut down for the G20 meeting for world leaders and said people would be able to go about their business.
Police are expecting as many as 2,000 protesters to march through the Square Mile on April 1 on the eve of the summit.

Conficker Computer Worm Threatens Chaos
Somewhere out there, perhaps in Eastern Europe, perhaps next door to us, a very clever hacker is spreading a sophisticated little computer worm called Conficker.
It could make an electronic mess as it spreads from one computer to another, taking over machines and commanding them to do things their users never intended.
"We've got some bad guys out there who are extremely sophisticated," said Merrick Furst, a professor at Georgia Institute of Technology who also chairs an Internet security firm called Damballa. "There are a huge number of machines that might be able to be controlled by people other than the owners of those machines."

Iapetus
Iapetus (ook wel Japetus) is een natuurlijke maan van Saturnus. De maan is in 1671 ontdekt door Giovanni Cassini. Iapetus is aan één kant veel donkerder dan aan de andere kant en heeft een 'gebonden' rotatie. Hierdoor is hij veel beter te zien als hij westelijk van Saturnus staat. Iapetus is genoemd naar de gelijknamige Titaan uit de Griekse mythologie, zie: Iapetus (mythologie).
Het oppervlak van de maan is met een temperatuur van 130 K op de donkere hemisfeer het warmst van het Saturnussysteem. De maan bestaat voornamelijk uit ijs en een klein deel silicaatgesteente.
De baan die Iapetus beschrijft om Saturnus is enigszins ongewoon. Hoewel het één van Saturnus' grootste manen is staat het op een veel grotere afstand dan Titan. Ook heeft de baan een veel grotere glooiingshoek ten opzichte van Saturnus' evenaar dan de andere grote manen. De oorzaak van deze afwijkingen is onbekend. Door de grotere afstand en glooiingshoek is het de enige grote maan waar vanaf de ringen van Saturnus zouden kunnen worden gezien.
In de zeventiende eeuw werd door Giovanni Cassini al aangenomen dat een kant van Iapetus veel donkerder was dan de andere kant. Dit baseerde hij op het feit dat Iapetus slechts aan een kant van Saturnus te zien was. Deze aanname werd in 1981 bevestigd door foto's genomen door Voyager 2 op een afstand van 966 000 km. De donkere helft heeft een albedo van 0,03 – 0,05 terwijl de lichte zijde een albedo van 0,5 - 0,6 heeft. De oorsprong van de materie dit verschijnsel veroorzaakt is onbekend.
Naast de al genoemde bijzonderheden van Iapetus is er nog een mysterie. Op de evenaar van de maan is door de ruimtesonde Cassini een plateau van 20 kilometer breed en 13 kilometer hoog ontdekt die zich uitstrekt over 1300 kilometer. Verschillende verklaringen zijn geponeerd maar geen is tot nu toe bewezen. Mogelijk zal de Cassini-sonde 10 september 2007 als het op een afstand van 1 200 kilometer de maan zal passeren foto's maken die meer duidelijkheid geven.

INTACT GENETIC MATERIAL EXTRACTED FROM AN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN MUMMY
HUMAN genetic material, largely undamaged after 2,400 years, has been extracted from an Egyptian mummy and has been grown in the laboratory. The achievement is the most dramatic of a series of recent accomplishments using molecular biology to study links between modern and ancient life.
Details of the recovery of DNA from the mummy will be published Thursday in the scientific journal Nature. The achievement by Dr. Svante Paabo of University of Uppsala in Sweden, is believed to be the first in which DNA, the genetic material in all forms of life, has been resurrected and duplicated from an ancient human or from any other specimen of such antiquity.
The ability to reproduce DNA from such an ancient source is expected to be a powerful new aid to archeology and to the study of evolution.

Barreleye
Barreleyes, also known as spookfish (a name also applied several species of chimaera), are small, deep-sea, odd-looking osmeriform fish comprising the family Opisthoproctidae. Found in tropical-to-temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, the family contains thirteen species in six genera (four of which are monotypic).
These fish are named for their barrel-shaped, tubular eyes which are generally directed upwards to detect the silhouettes of available prey; however, according to Robison and Reisenbichler these fish are capable of directing their eyes forward as well. The family name Opisthoproctidae is derived from the Greek words opisthe ("behind") and proktos ("anus").

The Baalbek foundation stones.
Why these stones are such an enigma to contemporary scientists, both engineers and archaeologists alike, is that their method of quarrying, transportation and precision placement is beyond the technological ability of any known ancient or modern builders. Various ‘scholars’, uncomfortable with the notion that ancient cultures might have developed knowledge superior to modern science, have decided that the massive Baalbek stones were laboriously dragged from the nearby quarries to the temple site. While carved images in the temples of Egypt and Mesopotamia do indeed give evidence of this method of block transportation - using ropes, wooden rollers and thousands of laborers - the dragged blocks are known to have been only 1/10th the size and weight of the Baalbek stones and to have been moved along flat surfaces with wide movement paths. The route to the site of Baalbek, however, is up hill, over rough and winding terrain, and there is no evidence whatsoever of a flat hauling surface having been created in ancient times.
