Do you enjoy the taste of tuna? If you answered yes to that question, there’s a very large chance that you actually enjoy the taste of many bizarre and exotic imposter ‘fake tuna’ fish types that have been peddled and mislabeled by the seafood industry and restaurants alike — even a ‘snake mackerel’ fish linked to side effects like anal oil leakage.
The new genetic testing campaign kickstarted and funded by the nonprofit organization known as Oceana, a group whose mission statement involves protecting the world’s oceans, reveals that 59% of tuna is not only mislabeled but is almost entirely compromised of a fish once banned by the FDA. Sushi restaurants were the worst offenders by far, but the tests spanned throughout restaurants and grocery stores alike. Altogether, the findings oust over half of tuna fish as fraudulent.
As you can see for yourself in the report by Oceana, the numerical breakdown of tuna fraud (especially ‘white tuna’) paints a picture of just how far companies will go to deliver rubbish products and deceive the consumer:

59% of the 'Tuna' Americans Eat Is Not Tuna
Nonprofit ocean protection group Oceana took 1,215 samples of fish from across the United States and genetically tested them in order to bring us the following astonishing facts:
- 59% of the fish labeled "tuna" sold at restaurants and grocery stores in the US is not tuna.
- Sushi restaurants were far more likely to mislabel their fish than grocery stores or other restaurants.

Psychopath vs Sociopath
Psychopathy and sociopathy are both
anti-social personality disorders. While both these disorders are the
result of an interaction between genetic predispositions and
environmental factors, psychopathy leans towards the hereditary whereas
sociopathy tends towards the environmental.
Psychopaths are born with temperamental differences such as impulsivity, cortical underarousal, and fearlessness that lead them to risk-seeking behavior and an inability to internalize social norms. On the other hand, sociopaths have relatively normal temperaments; their personality disorder being more an effect of negative sociological factors like parental neglect, delinquent peers, poverty, and extremely low or extremely high intelligence.
Anti-social personality disorder results in extremely violent acts. Though psychiatrists often consider and treat sociopaths and psychopaths as the same, criminologists treat them as different because of the difference in their outward behaviour.

Child Has A Robot Hand Made With 3D Printers
Despite being thousands of miles apart, Ivan Owen in
Bellingham, Washington and Richard Van As in South Africa built a
working robotic hand for a South African boy named Liam who was born
without fingers, reports TechCrunch.
When the team at MakerBot, a popular 3D printing company, heard about the project, it donated two of its new Replicator 2 3D printers to the cause.
A functioning hand has since been completed and Liam is using it "like a champion" after having it only three days.

Piglet with monkey’s face / Holoprosencephaly
Curious locals flocked to the home of owner Feng Changlin after news of the piglet spread in Fengzhang village, Xiping township.
“It’s hideous. No one will be willing to buy it, and it scares the family to even look at it!” Feng told Oriental Today.
He says the piglet looks just like a monkey, with two thin lips, a small nose and two big eyes. Its rear legs are also much longer than its forelegs, causing it to jump instead of walk.
Feng’s wife said the monkey-faced piglet was one of five newborns of a sow which the family had raised for nine years.
“My God, it was so scary. I didn’t known what it was. I was really frightened,” she said.
“But our son likes to play with it, and he stopped us from getting rid of it. He even feeds it milk.”

Corpse found in L.A. hotel's water tank
Los Angeles (CNN) -- Tourists staying at a Los
Angeles hotel bathed, brushed teeth and drank water from a tank in which
a young woman's body was likely decomposing for more than two weeks,
police said.
Elisa Lam's corpse was
found in the Cecil Hotel's rooftop water tank by a maintenance worker

Tuberculosis strain in India 'totally drug-resistant'
At least a dozen people in India are infected with a type of tuberculosis that is resistant to all antibiotics used to treat the disease.
In December, the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases published an online report that documented four of the cases. This weekend, news outlets in India reported that there were actually at least 12 people with the drug-resistant lung disease.
Officials fear that what they've seen so far is just the beginning, and that many more cases are lurking undetected.

Sniper Posts Pic of Child in Crosshairs
JERUSALEM - A photo posted online by an Israeli soldier showing a child
in the crosshairs of a rifle scope has created a firestorm on the
internet, drawing widespread criticism.
The photo was reportedly posted on Jan. 25 by Mor Ostrovski, 20, a member of an Israeli sniper unit. It shows crosshairs zeroed in on the back of the head of what appears to be a Palestinian boy in a village. The photo has since been taken down and Ostrovski's account has been deactivated.
"There are no other images to suggest that the photographer actually fired at the person in the image in this case," wrote Palestinian activist Ali Abuminah who runs the site Electronic Intifada and drew much of the attention to the photo. "The image is simply tasteless and dehumanizing. It embodies the idea that Palestinian children are targets."

"I survived the bombing of Dresden and continue to believe it was a war crime"
I wasn't new to murder and bloodletting. I had enlisted two years
prior to the outbreak of the second world war and by the time I was 21 I
had taken part in one major battle and various smaller ones. I had been
in fights where the ground in front of me was littered with the remains
of young men who had once been full of the joy of living, laughing and
joking with their mates. As each year of the war went by, the fighting
got more ferocious, new weapons were introduced and fresh young men
became the targets. How I remained a sane person through all this I
don't know.
Then came the evening of the 13 February, 1945 – 68 years ago this week. I was a prisoner of war held in Dresden. At about 10.30pm that night, the air raid sirens started their mournful wailing and because this happened every night no notice was taken. The people of Dresden believed that as long as the Luftwaffe kept away from Oxford, Dresden would be spared. The sirens stopped and after a short period of silence the first wave of pathfinders were over the city dropping their target flares...

The computer that never crashes
A revolutionary new computer based on the apparent chaos of nature can reprogram itself if it finds a fault
OUT of chaos, comes order. A computer
that mimics the apparent randomness found in nature can instantly
recover from crashes by repairing corrupted data.
Dubbed a "systemic" computer, the
self-repairing machine now operating at University College London (UCL)
could keep mission-critical systems working. For instance, it could
allow drones to reprogram themselves to cope with combat damage, or help create more realistic models of the human brain.
Everyday computers are ill suited to
modelling natural processes such as how neurons work or how bees swarm.
This is because they plod along sequentially, executing one instruction
at a time. "Nature isn't like that," says UCL computer scientist Peter
Bentley. "Its processes are distributed, decentralised and
probabilistic. And they are fault tolerant, able to heal themselves. A
computer should be able to do that."
Midway Island, where your plastic rubbish ends up

Software that tracks your every move and predicts future behavior draws heat
US defense giant Raytheon has developed a controversial software that
uses social networking sites to track your movements, able to predict
where a person will be and their future behavior. The program has drawn
criticism from civil rights groups.
A video obtained exclusively by The Guardian shows how software developed by the US defense contractor Raytheon, can gather vast amounts of personal information from social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.
Raytheon has admitted that the technology was shared with the US government as part of a joint research and development program in 2010, as part of an effort to build a national security system capable of analyzing trillions of entities from cyberspace.

"Blade Runner" Pistorius charged with murdering girlfriend
South African "Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius, a double amputee who became one of the biggest names in world athletics, was charged on Thursday with shooting dead his girlfriend at his upscale home in Pretoria.
Police said they opened a murder case after a 30-year-old woman was found dead at the Paralympic and Olympic star's house in the Silverlakes gated complex on the capital's outskirts.
Pistorius, 26, and his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, had been the only people in the house at the time of the shooting, police brigadier Denise Beukes told reporters, adding witnesses had been interviewed about the early morning incident.

A remote-controlled device to stop severe headache pain
Most sufferers of brutal migraine and cluster headaches are all too familiar with the warning signs of an approaching attack, but a California biotech company says it has created a device that can potentially stop the crippling pain as easily as flicking a switch.
Developed by Autonomic Technologies Inc., the therapy has successfully completed a trial of its technology on European patients with cluster headaches, also known as “suicide” headaches, the Redwood City, Calif., company said Tuesday.
The same device is being trialed for use on migraine headache patients in Europe, and the company plans to offer it for patients suffering from cluster and migraine headaches in the United States, too.

Uncontrolled gas flowing from well in Gulf of Mexico — WSJ: Experts trying to stop flow below seafloor
A natural gas well located approximately 50 miles east of Venice in the
Gulf of Mexico is releasing gas uncontrolled and has been evacuated,
according to a report today in Fuel Fix,
an energy news website operated in part by the Houston Chronicle. The
site reports 15 workers were evacuated from the Ensco 87 rig, which sits
in 218 feet of water, after tests found natural gas had migrated from
the 8300-foot well to a sand formation approximately 1100 feet below the
seabed. This uncontrolled flow happened after a blowout preventer had
been activated.

BBC Madness In The Fast Lane
The Swedish women gained international notoriety in
2008 after being filmed repeatedly and deliberately rushing headlong
into speeding traffic.
As onlookers watched in astonished horror, the twins attempted suicide multiple times on the busy motorway, their bodies crushed and devastatingly injured by oncoming traffic, only to rise repeatedly from the ground to attack rescue police with diabolical fury.
A documentary crew happened to be filming with police that shocking day, and was there to witness and capture the events. The now-famous BBC Documentary reveals the grisly and alarming first hand look at madness.

Artist Reconstructs Faces Using DNA Left Behind in NYC and a 3D Printer — Considers Implications of ‘Genetic Surveillance’
Seeing a hair in the crack of a piece
of glass, spurred Dewey-Hagborg to think of who its owner might be, what
they look like, what their personality is like, etc. With these
questions her “Stranger Visions” project was born.
To make her point regarding genetic
surveillance, Dewey-Hagborg has been using currently available
technology, which she wrote allows her to extract DNA from hair, locate
certain traits and create what a person’s face might look like.
She has taken DNA samples found
on the streets of New York City from a cigarette butts and gum and has
been able to determine gender, ethnicity (based on the mother’s side)
and eye color. Take a look at the face’s she has been able to
reconstruct based on her DNA analysis here.

Altruism
Altruism or selflessness is the principle or practice of concern for the welfare of others. It is a traditional virtue
in many cultures and a core aspect of various religious traditions,
though the concept of "others" toward whom concern should be directed
can vary among cultures and religions. Altruism or selflessness is the
opposite of selfishness.
Altruism can be distinguished from feelings of duty and loyalty. Altruism is a motivation to provide something of value to a party who must be anyone but one's self, while duty focuses on a moral obligation towards a specific individual (e.g., a god, a king), or collective (e.g., a government). Pure altruism consists of sacrificing something for someone other than the self (e.g. sacrificing time, energy or possessions) with no expectation of any compensation or benefits, either direct, or indirect (e.g., receiving recognition for the act of giving).
Much debate exists as to whether "true" altruism is possible. The theory of psychological egoism suggests that no act of sharing, helping or sacrificing can be described as truly altruistic, as the actor may receive an intrinsic reward in the form of personal gratification. The validity of this argument depends on whether intrinsic rewards qualify as "benefits."
The term altruism may also refer to an ethical doctrine that claims that individuals are morally obliged to benefit others. Used in this sense, it usually contrasted to egoism, which is defined as acting to the benefit of one's self.

CIA admits full monitoring of Facebook and other social networks
Most people use social media like Facebook and Twitter to share photos
of friends and family, chat with friends and strangers about random and
amusing diversions, or follow their favorite websites, bands and
television shows.
But what does the US military use those same networks for? Well, we can’t tell you: That’s “classified,” a CENTCOM spokesman recently informed Raw Story.
One use that’s confirmed, however, is the manipulation of social media through the use of fake online “personas” managed by the military. Recently the US Air Force had solicited private sector vendors for something called “persona management software.” Such a technology would allow single individuals to command virtual armies of fake, digital “people” across numerous social media portals.

Massachusetts bans driving in snowstorm
"I have now signed an executive order banning vehicle traffic effective at 4:00 pm (2100 GMT) today. There are a number of exemptions for that for emergency workers and the like. Please exercise caution and use common sense," he said at his emergency center in Framingham.
The National Weather Service predicted "a major winter storm with blizzard conditions" along most of the region's coastline, hitting especially hard around Boston.
Carrying the possible penalty of a year in jail, it was the first time a driving ban was ordered since an infamous blizzard in 1978, officials said.

Washington state law adopts gender-neutral language
Our society is beset by an overabundance of guns, people who text
while driving, an underfunded mental-health system and too many
education reformers bent on making every kid an engineer.
Big issues, those. But not as important to some as making our language more gender-neutral [“State law moves toward gender-neutral language,” NWMonday, Feb. 4].
No one can quarrel with “police officers” instead of “policemen,” since there are now many women on the force. Ditto “firefighters,” instead of “firemen.”

Abandoned Suitcases Reveal Private Lives of Insane Asylum Patients
If you were committed to a psychiatric institution, unsure if you’d ever
return to the life you knew before, what would you take with you? That
sobering question hovers like an apparition over each of the Willard
Asylum suitcases. From the 1910s through the 1960s, many patients at the
Willard Asylum for the Chronic Insane left suitcases behind when they
passed away, with nobody to claim them. Upon the center’s closure in
1995, employees found hundreds of these time capsules stored in a locked
attic. Working with the New York State Museum, former Willard staffers were able to preserve the hidden cache of luggage as part of the museum’s permanent collection.

ATF's Milwaukee sting operation marred by mistakes, failures
They were undercover agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives running a storefront sting aimed at busting criminal operations in the city by purchasing drugs and guns from felons.
But the effort to date has not snared any major dealers or taken down a gang. Instead, it resulted in a string of mistakes and failures, including an ATF military-style machine gun landing on the streets of Milwaukee and the agency having $35,000 in merchandise stolen from its store, a Journal Sentinel investigation has found.

Twitter has released its second transparency report
The list disclosed data requests from over 30 nations, and revealed
that the US government was responsible for 815 of the 1,009 information
requests in the second half of 2012 – just over 80 percent of all
inquiries.
Twenty percent of all US requests were ‘under seal,’ meaning that users were not notified that their information was accessed.
The overall number of requests worldwide also steadily increased last year, rising from 849 in the January to June 2012 period to 1009 in the July to December 2012 period.
Twitter’s legal policy manager Jeremy Kessel blogged that, “it is vital for us (and other Internet services) to be transparent about government requests for user information.”
“These growing inquiries can have a serious chilling effect on free expression – and real privacy implications,” he wrote.
