If there were a nuclear event in our country, radioactive iodine would be released, which can damage your thyroid gland or even cause thyroid cancer. This may be prevented by taking potassium iodate- KIO3- a thyroid blocker which is the only known protection for this problem, immediately after fallout.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) stated July 1, 1998 in USE OF POTASSIUM IODIDE IN EMERGENCY RESPONSE:
"Potassium iodide tablets, if taken in time, blocks the thyroid gland's uptake of radioactive iodine and thus could help prevent thyroid cancers and other diseases that might otherwise be caused by exposure to airborne radioactive iodine that could be dispersed in a nuclear accident."
