Lightning Captured by X-Ray Camera—A First
The first x-ray images of a lightning strike have been captured by a, well, lightning-fast camera, scientists say. The pictures suggest a lightning bolt carries all its x-ray radiation in its tip. (Get lightning facts.)
During recent thunderstorms in Camp Blanding, Florida, the camera's electronic shutter "froze" a lightning bolt—artificially triggered by rockets and wires—as it sped toward the ground at one-sixth the speed of light.
"Something moving this fast would go from the Earth to the moon in less than ten seconds," said Joseph Dwyer, a lightning researcher at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne.

In a secret Paris cavern, the real underground cinema
Police in Paris have discovered a fully equipped cinema-cum-restaurant in a large and previously uncharted cavern underneath the capital's chic 16th arrondissement.
Officers admit they are at a loss to know who built or used one of Paris's most intriguing recent discoveries.
"We have no idea whatsoever," a police spokesman said.
"There were two swastikas painted on the ceiling, but also celtic crosses and several stars of David, so we don't think it's extremists. Some sect or secret society, maybe. There are any number of possibilities."
Members of the force's sports squad, responsible - among other tasks - for policing the 170 miles of tunnels, caves, galleries and catacombs that underlie large parts of Paris, stumbled on the complex while on a training exercise beneath the Palais de Chaillot, across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower.
After entering the network through a drain next to the Trocadero, the officers came across a tarpaulin marked: Building site, No access.
Behind that, a tunnel held a desk and a closed-circuit TV camera set to automatically record images of anyone passing. The mechanism also triggered a tape of dogs barking, "clearly designed to frighten people off," the spokesman said.
Further along, the tunnel opened into a vast 400 sq metre cave some 18m underground, "like an underground amphitheatre, with terraces cut into the rock and chairs".
There the police found a full-sized cinema screen, projection equipment, and tapes of a wide variety of films, including 1950s film noir classics and more recent thrillers. None of the films were banned or even offensive, the spokesman said.
A smaller cave next door had been turned into an informal restaurant and bar. "There were bottles of whisky and other spirits behind a bar, tables and chairs, a pressure-cooker for making couscous," the spokesman said.
"The whole thing ran off a professionally installed electricity system and there were at least three phone lines down there."
Three days later, when the police returned accompanied by experts from the French electricity board to see where the power was coming from, the phone and electricity lines had been cut and a note was lying in the middle of the floor: "Do not," it said, "try to find us."

Obscene, threatening comments posted at anti-TSA website traced to Homeland Security servers
Officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) seem to now be going on the offensive against those who oppose its new invasive and unconstitutional airport security protocols being carried out by agents of the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA). According to George Donnelly, owner of WeWontFly.com, government workers appear to be posting hateful messages on his anti-TSA blog under the guise of anonymity.
One such comment, which has since been deleted, said, "F**k you, f**k all you c**ksuckers, you wont change anything." Another stated, "Ride the bus, TSA is here to stay there [sic] doing a great job keeping americia [sic] safe."
Donnelly says that upon tracing the origin of the comments, he discovered that they came from the servers of dhs.gov, the official website of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Nineteen comments in total were all posted from the same server, including the two previously mentioned. And while all were worded in different tones and voices, they all expressed hostility to those opposing the TSA.

Florida school board members recount meeting horror

Duke ended up firing shots but didn't hit anyone. Wounded by a security officer, Duke fell to the ground, where he turned the gun on himself. He was pronounced dead at a hospital of a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said.

So he had caps, but shot himself in the head to die of suicide...?!
The proceeds were set to go to a charity run by Mike Jones, the district security chief who wounded the gunman before he killed himself.

Army sees smartphones as important for soldiers
The Army plans to roll out wireless Common Access Card readers for the iPhone in January and for Android phones in April. This would give soldiers secure access to their e-mail, contacts and calendars.
At war, smartphones would let soldiers view real-time intelligence and video from unmanned systems overhead, and track friends and enemies on a dynamic map, officials said. But the Army must first work through the complex task of securing the data and the network before it sanctions smart phones on the battlefield.

Holidays about survival as jobless benefits end for 2 million.
Shawn Slonsky's children know by now not to give him Christmas lists filled with the latest gizmos. The 44-year-old union electrician is one of nearly 2 million Americans whose extended unemployment benefits will run out this month, making the holiday season less about celebration than survival.
"We'll put up decorations, but we just don't have the money for a Christmas tree," Slonsky said.
Benefits that had been extended up to 99 weeks started running out Wednesday. Unless Congress approves a longer extension, the Labor Department estimates about 2 million people will be cut off by Christmas.
Support groups for the so-called 99ers have sprung up online, offering chances to vent along with tips on resumes and job interviews. Advocacy groups such as the National Employment Law Project have turned their plight into a rallying cry for Congress to extend jobless benefits.

After giving his mother a hug, Michel went to his room, lit candles and placed a dagger and a 3-foot ceremonial Freemason sword by his side. Yannick then called him and asked him to go to the kitchen and pour water from a pot in which she was cooking three chickens. "I looked at these chickens lying dead in the pot and a voice told me it was a sacrifice. It was black magic," Michael said.
Instead of doing what his mother told him to, Michael went back to his room, saying that his mother asked him with a different voice. "She had the voice of the demon. I opened the door with the dagger at my side and the sword. I asked, 'Do you believe in God?' She said, 'No, Michael no,' and began screaming. I began slashing her like this," he said, bringing his right hand down.
"I didn't want to kill her right away. I wanted to give her time to get right with God," Michael said. And although police had asked to open the door by that time, Michael didn't even worry. "I was slashing my mom and I heard the police knocking on the door yelling, 'Michael, open up, Michael, open up,' but I knew they wouldn't open the door and stop me because the spirits were protecting me. I just kept cutting her. No one could stop me," he added.
"I was doing the work of God. I'm named after a saint myself - Saint Michael. He was protecting the house from the police. They weren't allowed to enter the apartment," Michael said. "I heard voices telling me how powerful I was, saying 'Oh he's good'."

In a warning issued on its internal website earlier this month, the Air Force said that "careless use of these services by airmen can have devastating operations security and privacy implications." The message was also sent to senior commanders, who were asked to get the word out to their forces.
The sites are a concern for U.S military services, which have 95,000 troops in Afghanistan and roughly 50,000 in Iraq. The Army, which provides the bulk of the battlefield forces, said it intends to circulate a similar warning about location services to key personnel next week.
The applications, which are offered by a variety of services including Facebook, Foursquare, Gowalla and Loopt, can identify a person's location, even pinpoint it on a map.

Blind man sees wife for first time after having a TOOTH implanted into his eye
When Martin Jones met his wife four years ago, he never imagined that one day he would get to see what she looked like.
The 42-year-old builder was left blind after an accident at work more than a decade ago.
But a remarkable operation - which implants part of his tooth in his eye - has now pierced his world of darkness.
The procedure, performed fewer than 50 times before in Britain, uses the segment of tooth as a holder for a new lens grafted from his skin.
'The doctors took the bandages off and it was like looking through water and then I saw this figure and it was her,' he said today.

Retina Implant Restores Vision, Lets Cyborgs See IR Spectrum
Scientists in Germany have developed a retina implant to restore vision to the blind that hints at the augmentation cyborgs may receive in the future. The device, developed by Retina Implant AG, is an array of 1500+ photodiodes (roughly 38×40 pixels) that is surgically placed under the retina. Light that enters the eye stimulates the photodiodes which send electric currents through the underlying neurons. In a recent article in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, researchers describe how blind patients (mostly suffering from retinitis pigmentosa) were able to see light and dark areas and discern basic shapes only a week after their surgeries. One man was even able to see the difference between objects, and read large letters! That would be remarkable enough, but implanted patients also reported a sensitivity to infrared light. That’s right, the retina implant could only provide very basic vision, but it did so in an extended spectrum. Cybernetic implants like these may not only be able to restore sight to the blind, they could let them see things that no normal person has ever seen before with their own eyes.

A new island has risen from nothing within a few days.
The increase in volcanic activity all over the world is frightening.
East of the Indonesian island Java, in the sea between Java and Bali, a new island has risen from nothing within a few days. It is probably of volcanic origin. The location is not so very far from Tambora.
West of Java the Anak Krakatoa is active, in the middle of Java the Merapi is very active and east of Java a new island has appeared in the sea, which wasn't there a few days ago. The fear of a coming mega-eruption is real.

China's President Hu Jintao has topped US President Barack Obama on the Forbes list of most powerful people, with the magazine pointing to Hu's sweeping powers and the stinging defeat of Obama's Democrats in legislative polls.
Hu was the world's most powerful person, saying he "exercises near dictatorial control over 1.3 billion people, one-fifth of world's population", the magazine said yesterday.
"Unlike Western counterparts, Hu can divert rivers, build cities, jail dissidents and censor internet without meddling from pesky bureaucrats, courts," it said.

Organ donor? No Thanx...: French cancer patient wakes up 14 hours after being pronounced dead.
Staff were so convinced that Lydia Paillard, 60, had passed away they asked her family if they could switch her life support machine off. Then she suddenly woke up.
Mrs Paillard had walked into a clinic in Bordeaux, southwestern France, on Monday for a chemotherapy session but after being put on a drip and taking pills, she went blue, fell into a coma and was pronounced "dead".
"We were told that she had passed away, that ... she wouldn't come back," said Sébastien Paillard, one of her three sons at their mother's bedside.
Despite the doctors' assurances, the sons could not bring themselves to switch off respiratory support and she was transferred to another wing of the hospital.
That afternoon, staff in the new clinic said they had noticed encouraging signs of brain activity.
Finally, some 14 hours after she had officially died, Mrs Paillard suddenly woke up. Turning to her incredulous son, Sébastien, she said: "Ah, I feel so good, I had a wonderful sleep."
"To think we were about to give permission to kill our mother," Mr Paillard told France's Sud Ouest newspaper, adding that until now his family had full confidence in hospital staff.

Mexican Army Receives Beheaded Body Of Investigator In David Hartley Killing In A Suitcase
The lead investigator in a high-profile murder case involving pirates on a Mexican border lake has been killed, his decapitated body delivered to the Mexican military in a suitcase.
Rolando Armando Flores Villegas, head of state investigators in the border city of Ciudad Miguel Aleman, had been investigating the death of David Michael Hartley. Hartley, a Colorado native, is believed to have been shot by pirates while jetskiing on the Mexican side of Falcon Lake near Laredo, Texas.
The incident gained exposure after Texas Governor Rick Perry publicly pressured the Mexican government to step up efforts to find Hartley's body and his killers.
