Egypt unplugs Internet as protests loom; "unprecedented in Internet history"
SAN FRANCISCO - About a half-hour past midnight Friday morning in Egypt, the Internet went dead.
Almost simultaneously, the handful of companies that pipe the Internet into and out of Egypt went dark as protesters were gearing up for a fresh round of demonstrations calling for the end of President Hosni Mubarak's nearly 30-year rule, experts said.
Egypt has apparently done what many technologists thought was unthinkable for any country with a major Internet economy: It unplugged itself entirely from the Internet to try and silence dissent.
Experts say it's unlikely that what's happened in Egypt could happen in the United States because the U.S. has numerous Internet providers and ways of connecting to the Internet. Coordinating a simultaneous shutdown would be a massive undertaking.
"It can't happen here," said Jim Cowie, the chief technology officer and a co-founder of Renesys, a network security firm in Manchester, New Hampshire, that studies Internet disruptions. "How many people would you have to call to shut down the U.S. Internet? Hundreds, thousands maybe? We have enough Internet here that we can have our own Internet. If you cut it off, that leads to a philosophical question: Who got cut off from the Internet, us or the rest of the world?"

Facebook Brings in $1.86 Billion Worldwide Advertising Revenue in 2010
Facebook’s self-service ad platform is seeing a lot of business as of late. The popular social networking site has seen a worldwide advertising revenue increase of 86% versus the previous year’s results, courtesy of the $1.86 billion in revenue in took in. Of that, $1.21 billion was earned within the United States, adds the analyst.
The main takeaway of the results, though, is where the majority of the money is coming from. According to eMarketer, 60 percent –or $1.12 billion– stems from small- or medium-sized business that are more than likely using self-serve tools to advertise on the social website. That’s compared to the $740 million that’s being produced by major marketers, like Coke, Match.com, and P&G. According to Debra Williamson, the principal analyst at eMarketer, these small- and medium-sized businesses are taking advantage of Facebook’s rapid growth (which now has over 650 million users), and using the strategies they used to promote themselves on Google to do the same thing on Facebook.

Thousands of dead octopuses wash up on Portugal beach
Thousands of dead octopuses have washed up on a beach in northern Portugal, in what is being called an environmental disaster.
They cover a 5-mile stretch of Vila Nova de Gaia beach - no reason has yet been found for their appearance.
The authorities have warned the public not to eat them.

Here's a high-tech solution to making fruitless laps around parking garages and getting into fights with fellow parkers. It's called the Woehr Multiparker 730, and it's one of several such "multiparkers" Woerhr has constructed throughout Europe.
But for the added convenience, you'll have to give up some control over exactly where your car gets parked. Cloning might create live woolly mammoth
KYOTO, Japan, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- The extinct woolly mammoth could be brought back to life in as little as four years thanks to a breakthrough in cloning technology, a Japanese researcher says.
Akira Iritani, a professor at Kyoto University, says he wants to resurrect the species that died out 5,000 years ago by recovering nuclei from cells in the skin and muscle tissue of mammoths found in Siberian permafrost and inserting the nuclei into the egg cells of an African elephant, which will act as the surrogate mother for the mammoth, Britain's Daily Telegraph reported Thursday.
Previous efforts in the 1990s to recover nuclei from Siberian mammoths failed because they had been too badly damaged by the extreme cold.
However, a technique pioneered at the Riken Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe, Japan, was successful in cloning a mouse from the cells of another mouse that had been frozen for 16 years.

Pentagon officials believe gene-mapping all military personnel could lower health costs within the military and help scientist learn a great deal about the link between fighting and genetics.

The Department of Defense will be in charge of the giant database housing the soldiers records and will likely benefit by organizing personnel data into phenotypes for the military.

Bloody spree of 27 killings - including 14 decapitations - stuns Acapulco
The 14 headless bodies, and a 15th intact corpse, were found by police on a street outside a shopping centre accompanied by written warnings from a drug cartel, authorities said.
Handwritten signs left with the bodies were signed by "El Chapo's People," a reference to the Sinaloa cartel, which is headed by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, said Fernando Monreal Leyva, director of investigative police for Guerrero state, where Acapulco is located.
The narco-messages indicated the Sinaloa cartel killed the 15 men for trying to intrude on the gang's turf and extort residents.
Mexico's drug cartels have increasingly taken to beheading their victims in a grisly show of force, but Saturday's discovery was the largest single group of decapitation victims found in recent years.
In 2008, a group of 12 decapitated bodies were piled outside the Yucatan state capital of Merida. The same year, nine headless men were discovered in the Guerrero state capital of Chilpancingo.

On New Year’s Day, a devastating terrorist bombing at a Coptic church in Egypt killed 21 people and injured 79 others. Although the identity of the culprits was not known, it was assumed that they were Muslim extremists, intent on targeting those they saw as heretics. Religious tensions immediately rose in the country, and angry Copts stormed streets, battled with police, and even vandalized a nearby mosque. The riots and heightened tensions between the Muslim and Coptic communities was likely what the terrorists wanted — to divide the Egyptian community and create sectarian strife between different religious groups.
Yet by Coptic Christmas Eve, which took place Thursday night in Egypt, things had changed completely. As Egyptian Copts attended mass at churches across the country, “thousands” of Muslims, including “the two sons of President Hosni Mubarak,” joined them, acting as “human shields” to protect from terrorist attacks by extremists. Presidents aide John Weeler found dead in Delaware landfill
A prominent Washington aide has been murdered and his body left in a garbage truck on a landfill site.
The killing of John Wheeler, 66, who served as a military adviser to three presidents, has left police mystified.
The body of the former Army officer and Vietnam veteran - who was instrumental in building the iconic Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall in Washington DC - was discovered on a Delaware landfill on New Year’s Eve.
But detectives say they have no motive for the crime, which has shocked the political community and devastated Mr Wheeler’s family and friends.
He was chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and spearheaded the creation of the controversial black granite memorial on the National Mall that is etched with over 58,000 names of troops killed in the war.
‘He was a great patriot,’ said Jan Scruggs, the wall’s founder. ‘I know how passionate he was about honouring all who serve their nation, and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.'
Mr Scruggs said he was shocked and baffled by the murder of the married defence contractor, who served as an advisor under presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush Senior.

Ashley Turton, Congressional Affairs Director, Found Dead In Burning Car
Ashley Turton, director of congressional affairs for Progress Energy, was found dead in a burning car Monday morning in Washington, Politico reports. Turton's husband is White House deputy director of House legislative affairs, Dan Turton.
According to the Washington Post, "a preliminary investigation indicated that the car crashed into the garage of a home in the 800 block of A Street SE."
Roll Call reports that neighbors say the fire started at approximately 5:00 AM. "[Metropolitan Police Lt. Nicholas] Breul said fire officials were at the scene two minutes after neighbors dialed 911. When the fire was extinguished, firefighters discovered Turton’s body inside the car."

Joseph Henrich of the University of British Columbia took the Ultimatum Game into the Peruvian Amazon as part of his work on understanding human co-operation in the mid-1990s and found that the Machiguenga considered the idea of offering half your money downright weird — and rejecting an insultingly low offer even weirder.
“I was inclined to believe that rejection in the Ultimatum Game would be widespread. With the Machiguenga, they felt rejecting was absurd, which is really what economists think about rejection,” Dr. Henrich says. “It’s completely irrational to turn down free money. Why would you do that?”

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology, proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper A Theory of Human Motivation.[2] Maslow subsequently extended the idea to include his observations of humans' innate curiosity. His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, all of which focus on describing the stages of growth in humans.
Maslow studied what he called exemplary people such as Albert Einstein, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass rather than mentally ill or neurotic people, writing that "the study of crippled, stunted, immature, and unhealthy specimens can yield only a cripple psychology and a cripple philosophy."[3] Maslow studied the healthiest 1% of the college student population.[4]

Four visions of city life in 2040
There are a few different scenarios explored here. The first is "Sprawl-ville," which is basically the worst-case. Most people still use fossil fuel cars, and traffic gets so bad that everyone is pretty much forced to drive giant motor homes. Building more roads doesn't really solve the problem.

Third, "Renew-abad," is a bit more optimistic. Most people work (and vacation!) through virtual reality and telepresence, cutting down on transportation needs. Power production is decentralized and local, and services are taking the place of products. Conventional cars don't exist anymore, and eco-friendly mass transit combines with small electric cars for individual transport.
Finally comes scenario four, "Communi-city." The emphasis here is on individual neighborhoods rather than cities, lessening transportation issues since people don't have to travel as far. Robotic cars have completely taken over from mass transit. Also, "Facebook votes to disband UN!"

In a company video, seen by The Sunday Times, Helmut Fluhrer, the founder of Metro Systems International, the Swiss company in charge of the project, said: "We are currently operating our innovative rainfall enhancement technology, Weathertec, in the region of Al Ain in Abu Dhabid. We started in June 2010 and have achieved a number of rainfalls."

Princeton Grad Student Dies In Apparent Suicide. Left a 4,000-word suicide note detailing a childhood of physical and sexual abuse
Bill Zeller, a Princeton Ph.D candidate and renowned internet programmer, died Wednesday from injuries sustained in a suicide attempt. He was 27.
Zeller stunned the programming community with a 4,000-word suicide note detailing a childhood of physical and sexual abuse, which he had never before disclosed to anyone.
"I've never been able to stop thinking about what happened to me and this hampered my social interactions," Zeller wrote. "... I wondered what it would be like to take [sic] to other people without what happened constantly on my mind, and I wondered if other people had similar experiences that they were better able to mask."
According to the Daily Princetonian, Zeller posted the note on his website and e-mailed it to friends before taking his own life. The note in full can be seen below.

I have the urge to declare my sanity and justify my actions, but I assume I'll never be able to convince anyone that this was the right decision. Maybe it's true that anyone who does this is insane by definition, but I can at least explain my reasoning. I considered not writing any of this because of how personal it is, but I like tying up loose ends and don't want people to wonder why I did this. Since I've never spoken to anyone about what happened to me, people would likely draw the wrong conclusions.
My first memories as a child are of being raped, repeatedly. This has affected every aspect of my life. This darkness, which is the only way I can describe it, has followed me like a fog, but at times intensified and overwhelmed me, usually triggered by a distinct situation. In kindergarten I couldn't use the bathroom and would stand petrified whenever I needed to, which started a trend of awkward and unexplained social behavior. The damage that was done to my body still prevents me from using the bathroom normally, but now it's less of a physical impediment than a daily reminder of what was done to me.
This darkness followed me as I grew up. I remember spending hours playing with legos, having my world consist of me and a box of cold, plastic blocks. Just waiting for everything to end. It's the same thing I do now, but instead of legos it's surfing the web or reading or listening to a baseball game. Cops Stripped Dead Victim & Took Pictures Of Her Naked Body
The family of a Chicago victim killed in an auto accident has filed a lawsuit claiming police officers took her clothes off & took pictures of her naked body.
20 year old Jessica Mejia died in a car crash driven by her boyfriend. The car spun out of control & hit a pole before rolling into a ditch.
The lawsuit claims that the police from the Cook County Sheriff's office stripped Mejia's body in plain site & took several photos of her on the side of the road, which isn't required by protocol. The department spokesman Steve Patterson denied the accusations & said the department "never before heard of the bizarre scenario this lawsuit describes".
More than $200,000 has been filed for "severe & extreme distress".

Killer, Brandon Palladino To Inherit Half A Million Dollars From Woman He Murdered!
New York (CNN) — A man imprisoned for killing his mother-in-law in 2008 could soon inherit his victim’s assets, valued at a minimum of $250,000, authorities said.
The strange twist of fate was made possible after the death of Deanna Palladino, wife of convicted killer Brandon Palladino and sole inheritor of her slain mother’s assets, according to Suffolk County court documents.
The money she inherited from her mother, Dianne Edwards, could soon become the inheritance of her husband, who is awaiting formal sentencing for Edwards’ killing at Suffolk County jail in Long Island, New York, according to District Attorney spokesman Robert Clifford.
Palladino pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter on October 12, in exchange for a plea deal, Clifford said.
He is expected to face up to 25 years in prison, Clifford added.
But the possibility that Palladino could become the new owner of Edwards’ assets has outraged some of Edwards’ family members.
“He’s going to benefit from this crime, he’s going to profit from a murder,” said Donna Larsen, Edwards’ sister. “When he gets out of jail and is in his 40s, he’s going to have a quarter-million dollars to move on with his life after murdering somebody.”
Edwards’ brother-in-law, Andy Larsen, said, “It’s terrible that you have to fight a killer for the victim’s assets when he’s a confessed murderer and he’s going to be profiting from the crime.”
Repeated attempts to reach Palladino’s attorney, Raymond Perini, for comment were not successful.
Dennis Lemke, an attorney advising Larsen, said he is going to do “whatever is necessary to make sure the money doesn’t get into the hands of the murderer.”
He said “a person can’t benefit from their own criminal conduct, so the Larsens have to prove that the daughter was in fact involved in Edwards’ murder.”
Police would not comment whether Deanna Palladino was suspected in the death of her mother, and did not provide evidence that supports Lemke’s allegation.
Wis. men allegedly used snake in sex assault
Two Wisconsin men have pleaded not guilty in the case of a woman who says she was sexually assaulted with a snake, TheSmokingGun.com reports.
The woman, identified as C.L.F. in the documents posted on the website, told police she was at her friend's boyfriend's house in the early morning hours of Nov. 11. She said people there were dancing and "consuming intoxicants."
The woman alleges she was invited back into a bedroom to see photos of the boyfriend's family while her friend was in the shower, but when she entered the room, she was hit on the back of the head with something and blacked out.
According to the allegations in the criminal complaint, the woman woke up with her friend's boyfriend holding her while another man sexually assaulted her. That's when C.L.F. told police the friend's boyfriend said, "I'm going to get the snake."
The woman said shortly after that she felt something inside her. The document says the woman "believed that the snake may have bitten her because she felt a very sharp pain and then they said, 'Pull it out.'"
The friend's boyfriend, whom authorities are tracking with a GPS bracelet, has prior sexual assault convictions and denies the accusations. The document indicates the other man has said he had sexual contact with C.F.L., but said it was consensual.
TheSmokingGun.com reported the two men, Damonta Jones, 25, and John Bullock, 24, pleaded not guilty on Monday. Both men return to court March 31.

Birds, fish die en masse in Arkansas

An estimated 100,000 fish have died in the northwest of Arkansas, the same state where up to 5000 dead birds recently fell from the sky.
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said it suspected disease was to blame for the death of the drum fish, which floated in the water and lined the banks of a 30-kilometre stretch of the Arkansas River near Ozark, about 200km northwest of Little Rock, CNN reported on Sunday.
Ozark is about 200km west of the town of Beebe, where game wardens were trying to find out why up to 5000 blackbirds fell from the sky just before midnight on New Year's Eve, CNN said.

Keith Stephens from the game and fish commission said fish kills occurred every year but the size of the latest one was unusual, and suggested some sort of disease was to blame.
"The fish kill only affected one species of fish," he told CNN.

PA School District Used Webcams On School Issued Laptops To Spy On Kids
The truth has started to come out in the Philadelphia school webcam spying case, Blake Robbins vs. Lower Merion School District, affirming a number of things the Judiciary Report stated all along.
It was revealed today, Harriton High's undisclosed webcam program that secretly spied on students through their school issued laptops, snapped THOUSANDS OF PHOTOS OF KIDS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN THEIR HOMES. Students were snapped without their knowledge and consent in different states of undress and while sleeping, among other things.

Thousands of birds fall from the sky in Beebe
Just before folks in Beebe rang in the New Year, many witnessed an uncanny resemblance to the Hitchcock movie "The Birds." About 2,000 black birds fell from the sky off Windwood Drive, leaving quite the mess to clean up.
Folks Today's THV spoke with initially thought the birds were poisoned because they are what they call a nuisance around this time every year, but they are surprised to hear it is more of a mystery.
Stephen Bryant recalls, "Millions, millions fly over every night. You look up at the sky and it's just black and then last night at about 10:30 I came out here and saw a bird drop."
In a matter of hours on New Years Eve thousands of birds fell from the sky to their death.
Melissa Weatherly says, "I immediately called mom because I had to go to work, I said you have to come get the kids and get the dog because I don't know what's going on." She continues, "It was horrible; you could not even get down the road without running over hundreds. It was that bad."
The mystery is unraveling like scenes from a movie, dozens of U.S. Environmental Services crews spent the day picking up the birds, walking between homes and climbing on roofs with protective hazmat suits and breathing masks,.
Charles Boldrey stands outside watching the crews, "Nobody knows, I asked these guys who are out here picking them up and they don't seem to know anything. Nobody seems to know anything. It just kind of freaked everybody out."
Officials with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission flew over the area and determined it's a one mile stretch. There are a variety of dead black birds, mostly red winged and a duck was also found.
